The Aspirus Rhinelander Hospital Birthing Center is utilizing a Panda Warmer to help care for newborns and infants thanks to funding from the Aspirus Rhinelander Hospital Foundation.

According to an Aspirus press release, the Panda Warmer allows birthing center staff to easily interact with newborns and infants while keeping them warm and content.

“All of your emergency equipment is on this device so you can weigh the baby, give oxygen, provide suction or even resuscitate,” Amy Bormann, interim supervisor, Aspirus Rhinelander Hospital Birthing Center, explained. “You can do everything that you need to for life-saving care as it’s all built into one device.”

The Panda Warmer provides direct heat application to a newborn to keep them warm while allowing providers to stay cool and comfortable without having to duck under an overhead heater. Also, the compact size of the unit allows more room for the provider and the family to interact with the little patient and it also offers turn-key technology.

The Warmer is a mobile unit so nurses can move it from room to room quickly. It can also be valuable after a high-risk delivery and the Birthing Center trains for those scenarios, the release states.

“The baby may need help breathing after a high-risk delivery so we’re able to use our resuscitators during those situations,” added Bormann. “You can give continuous positive airway pressure to the baby, blow-by oxygen, and we can do a full code on the baby if needed right on the device.”

“With the help of our donors, the Aspirus Rhinelander Hospital Foundation is honored to equip our outstanding Birthing Center staff with the necessary equipment to take care of our community,” said Amy Vanney, Aspirus Rhinelander Hospital Foundation. “This allows our dedicated providers to have the technology they need to care for newborns and infants in the patient room without having to transport them throughout the hospital for services.”

The Birthing Center is hoping to purchase more Panda Warmers over the next few years. For more information on the Aspirus Rhinelander Hospital Birthing Center, visit aspirus.org.
