Rhinelander Wrestling Club hosts youth tournament

The Rhinelander Wrestling Club held its annual Hodag Youth Tournament at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium Saturday, March 2. The club had 31 wrestlers take part in the Pre-K through eighth-grade tournament, competing in four wrestler brackets. Place winners were as follows:

First Place: Logan Edwardson, Edison Webb, Gage Dantoin.

Second Place: Tobias Webb, Turner Kreitlow, Reed Barbour, Levi Figueroa, Lawson Hansen, Jacob Brey, Evelyn Johnson, Asher Melvin.

Third Place: Tobias Daab, Ryker Melton, Drizztyn Marineau, Teagan McLaughlin, William Johnson, Jace White, William Jacobs.

Fourth Place:Tucker Kreitlow, Shelby Madrid, Wesley Melton, Jeremiah Fath, Blazzdyn Marineau, Brady Bath, Adrian Zivko, Joseph Jacobs, Carter Rawlsky, Ezra Vassar, Isaac Austin, Nico Heikola, Trevor Denton.

Middle School Nordic skiers compete at state meet

The Hodag Nordic middle school ski team took a handful of skiers to the rescheduled Wisconsin Nordic Ski League state distance championships in Cable March 2-3. 

The Hodag boys took 10th out of 10 qualifying teams in the field while the Hodag girls did not have enough skiers to qualify for a team score. 

Aaron Calhoun paced the Hodag boys on both days. He finished 27th overall in a field of 68 skiers with a combined time of 29 minutes, 52.9 seconds. He was 25th in Saturday’s 3.5-kilometer classic technique race and 34th in Sunday’s freestyle race. 

Jacob MacFarland was 60th overall (38:19.8), with the 57th-fastest time in both races. Samuel Loomis was 61st (38:21.6), taking 56th in classic and 59th in freestyle. 

Noelle Mayo led the Hodag girls, placing 42nd overall (36:59.3). She finished 42nd in classic and 44th in freestyle. Pearl Calhoun was 43rd overall, taking 46th in classic and 42nd in freestyle.

JV girls' basketball awards

The Rhinelander High School girls’ basketball team presented awards to its junior varsity players during its season-ending banquet at the Cedric A. Vig Outdoor Classroom Sunday, March 3. 

Liliana Kurilla and Gracie Anderson shared the team’s most improved award, Lexi Beran won the Hodag award and Ella Miljevich won the team’s defensive award.
