‘Maggie’s Fish Fry’ to benefit Sugar Camp woman battling brain cancer
The Sugar Camp community is banding together to support one of their own as she battles an aggressive form of brain cancer.
As part of the effort, Pitlik’s Sand Beach Resort will host a fundraiser fish fry for strength, support and healing, from 4 to 9 p.m. March 22 to benefit 24-year-old Maggie Servent.
According to a press release announcing the fundraiser, 100 percent of the proceeds from the fish fry dinner will benefit Servent, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor on Jan. 2.
“Two weeks later, on Jan. 15, four days before her 24th birthday, she had a 6.5 cm tumor removed the area of her brain responsible for higher functioning, decision making, and language processing,” the releases states.
The six-hour procedure, performed by doctors at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., resulted in removal of 95 percent of the tumor. The battle continues, however, as Servent is currently undergoing intensive chemotherapy and radiation.
According to the release, Servent has grade 4 Astrocytoma with an IDH mutation and a homozygous loss of CDKN2A, one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer.
