The Lakeside Center, on the campus of Nicolet College in Rhinelander, was bustling with activity last Tuesday evening, Feb. 27, 2024 as young gamers moved from station to station playing demos of digital games designed by fellow gaming enthusiasts. The showcase event was the culmination of the 2024 Global Game Jam, a partnership between the School District of Rhinelander Community Education Program, Nicolet College, and ArtStart that allows middle and high school students to design their own games with direction from Jeremy Nikolai, a software engineer and programmer from Stevens Point. “It’s wonderful that we are able to offer this opportunity to students who are interested in gaming, coding, art, and creativity,” said Mike Cheslock of the School District of Rhinelander. “The students are being connected with professionals in the field to give them a valuable hands-on experience. It’s possible that we have some future gaming engineers within the program!”
