Jerry W. Niemuth, age 85, died on June 15, 2024 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born on September 26, 1938, in Rhinelander, the son of Walter and Daisy (Byers) Niemuth. Jerry was preceded in death by his four sisters: Esther (Norman) Bergman, Norma (John) Robinson, Leona Sandvoss and Ardeth (Frank) Trickey. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jeanne A. (DeMeyer) Niemuth, sons Tod Niemuth and Guy Niemuth, Aaron Niemuth, three grandchildren Rachel, Louis and Martin Niemuth and many other relatives and friends.

A hunting and sports enthusiast, Jerry was very involved with Muny League fastpitch softball and showshoe baseball in his youth, and in later life he enjoyed playing horseshoes, golf, dartball and cribbage. Most especially, however, he loved rooting for his beloved Wisconsin teams the Packers, the Brewers and the Badgers!

After retiring from the Rhinelander Paper Mill in his early 60s, Jerry thoroughly enjoyed his retirement by pursuing his love of horseshoes. He joined the National Horseshoe Pitching Association and he and his wife would travel throughout Wisconsin and neighboring states to compete in tournaments (which Jeanne patiently watched with fond amusement). Jerry also organized and ran many local horseshoe tournaments in Rhinelander as well as in Gulf Shores, Ala. where Jerry and Jeanne spent many winter months avoiding the cold and snow of northern Wisconsin. A very engaging and social person, Jerry relished connecting with friends and chatting with anyone willing to exchange a joke or debate why the Packers, Brewers and/or Badgers had that unfortunate loss last time around.

As age and illness slowed him down at the end of his life, he was thankful that so many friends and relatives came to visit, chat and lend their support. The family particularly wishes to thank his hospice “angels” from Aspirus Seasons of Life, who provided excellent care and with whom Jerry very much enjoyed chatting and sharing jokes and stories. Per his final wishes, no services or visitation will be held. The family asks that you honor Jerry's memory and love of laughter and storytelling by sharing a fond or funny memory of him with as many who care to listen.
