James “Gib” Zmek

James “Gib” Zmek, a lifelong resident of Sugar Camp, passed away on Friday, June 7, 2024. Gib was very conversational and known by many in the communities of Sugar Camp and Eagle River. In his early years of life he spent time working on the resort with his parents, which James and Agnes Zmek owned on Arbutus Lake.

Gib played sports through his high school years, excelling in football and basketball. Later in life his passion included excavating, heavy equipment and recycling metals. He worked for the Town of Sugar Camp for many years and had his own business, Gilbert Zmek Excavating. Later, in his retirement years, Gib loved an opportunity to work with his son, Bruce, on his excavating business. A visit from any of the many grandkids, nieces and nephews always made his day. 

Gib is survived by his children: Bruce (Angel) Zmek, Carol Zmek, brothers Bob (Barb) Zmek and Bill (Terry) Zmek; grandchildren: Brandon, Kaylea, Chloe, MaKayla, Hadie and Livia. 

He was preceded in death by his son Duane Zmek, daughter Beverly Zmek, sister Rita and parents, James and Agnes Zmek. 

Gib appreciated all of the people who were involved in his life. 

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2024 at the Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home in Eagle River. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service.
