Girls’ soccer: Lakeland 1, Rhinelander 0
The Rhinelander High School girls’ soccer team’s season came to an end Saturday with a 1-0 loss at Lakeland in the WIAA regional finals.
Josie Wentland broke the scoreless tie with a goal off a free kick in the 47th minute and the Hodags, despite doubling up Lakeland in shots 18-9, were never able to find the equalizer.
Lakeland Ave Evenhouse recorded 10 saves in the win while Rhinelander Mya Krouze recorded only two saves in defeat.
Rhinelander finishes with a 12-3-4 record.
Track & Field: Libbey Buchmann 4th, WIAA state meet
Sophomore Libbey Buchmann returned to the podium Saturday at the WIAA state track meet, taking four in the D2 girls’ discus event.
Buchmann narrowly snuck into the finals with a toss of 112 feet, 10 inches that had her 10th following the three rounds of preliminary tosses. She scored her throw of record, a 123-8, in her fifth throw which sat third until it was eclipsed by Fox Valley Lutheran’s Emma Nelson in the final round.
Notre Dam Academy’s Sydney Whitehouse went 127-2 in her first throw, which held on for the state title. Colby’s Daelyn Reick was second with a 126-7. It marked Buchmann’s second straight podium finish at state, after taking sixth in the event last year.
