Minocqua Public Library August events


Preschool/Toddler (Ages 0-4)

• Join Children’s Wisconsin staff for Wiggle, Giggle and Shake on Thursdays at 10 a.m. Children ages 0-4 and their caregivers are invited to sing, dance and play in the library’s program room.  


Kids and Families (Ages 0-12)

• On Thursday, Aug. 8 at 10 a.m., we’ll be making Fairy Gardens at Minocqua Winter Park (7543 Squirrel Hill Road)!  We’ll start at the chalet and take a hay wagon ride out to the tea house. Local author Jennifer Schmidig will read her book “Fairy and Gnome Tales,” followed by a question-and-answer session, a fairy garden craft, lemonade and cookies. This program is intended for school-aged children.

• Smokey Bear is turning 80! Join us for a Smokey Bear Birthday Party in his honor!  Friday, Aug. 9 at 1 p.m., we’ll have a photo opportunity with Smokey, birthday treats, and Smokey activities and swag.

• Stop by the Kemp Natural Resources Station (9161 Kemp Road) on Wednesday, Aug. 14 at 2 p.m. for a Campfire Singalong! Listen to stories and songs and roast your own smores!

• The last Lego Club of the summer will happen in the library’s program room Saturday, Aug. 17 from 10 a.m. to noon. Free build or participate in fun challenges!

• Join us by the library’s garden beds for Kids’ Day @ The Library! Enjoy music, bubbles, chalk, a craft, a scavenger hunt and pick-your-own carrots!  The event will happen Wednesday, Aug. 28 at 10 a.m.


Adults (Ages 18+)

• Ukulele Play Along! Monday, Aug. 5, 10 a.m. Calling all ukulele players! Join us for this informal get together with other ukulele players as we practice our tunes, share playing tips and introduce attendees to new music. Bring your own uke or use a library one! Beginners welcome.

• Mindfulness: The Opportunities in Not Knowing. Tuesday, Aug. 6, 1:30 p.m. Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the moment, cultivating awareness and acceptance of our thoughts, feelings and surroundings. Join us as Kathy Mitchell guides us through mindfulness skills to live well every day.

• Adult Trivia Night @ the Library, Tuesday, Aug. 6, 5:30 p.m. Don’t miss out! Bring a team or join a team! Snacks for all and a prize for the winning team. No registration needed.

• Lakeland Area Genealogy Society, Tuesday, Aug. 13, 1:30 p.m. The Lakeland Area Genealogical Society will hold its monthly meeting at the Minocqua Public Library on Aug. 13 at 1:30 p.m. This month’s program will be a video entitled “Shared DNA matches-the only DNA tool you will ever need” presented by Diahan Southard. The program will provide valuable information to those who have already taken a DNA test and want to make the best use of the test results. For those who have not yet taken a DNA test, they will discover how a DNA test can be used to enhance their genealogy research. Visitors are always welcome to join us.

• American Family Stories, Joe McHugh. Thursday, Aug. 15, 5:30 p.m. Join us for a captivating evening of family stories. Noted storyteller Joe McHugh has traveled the backroads of America meeting people and recording their family stories. Many of these stories have been featured on programs for public radio, NPR’s Morning Edition, and Voice of America.

• Internet Safety with Bug Tussel University. Monday, Aug. 19, 10 a.m. to noon. Learn steps and strategies you can take to protect your information and improve your safety while using the internet.

• Night at the Minocqua Museum Open House. Thursday, Aug. 22, 6 p.m. Join us for a fun night of exploring museum exhibits! Each exhibit tells the unique story of our local community, and the cozy atmosphere makes it easy to connect with the exhibits and appreciate the local heritage. Minocqua Museum, 503 Flambeau Street, Minocqua.

• Community Bingo! Friday, Aug. 23, 11 a.m. to noon. Get ready to shout “BINGO!” and win some prizes at this fun-filled event. Our professional Bingo caller will guide you through multiple rounds of the classic game, and there will be plenty of opportunities to win big. Refreshments will be provided!

• Lakeland Historical Discussions. Thursday, Aug. 29, 5:30 p.m. The Minocqua Fire of 1912. Presented by Dan Scrobell, local history enthusiast. In 1912, a fire which started across from where the post office sits today destroyed most of the buildings along Front Street. Much of the town’s business district was destroyed by a major fire in 1912. Many of the buildings on the main street today were designed and built after the fire.


All Ages

• National Coloring Book Day is Saturday, Aug. 3. We will have coloring books and coloring pages set out for anyone to enjoy while visiting the library today!

• Book Lovers Day is Saturday, Aug. 10. Stop by the library’s craft desk during open hours Aug. 5-10 to make your own book magnet!

• Bad Poetry Week is Monday, Aug. 19-24. Visit the library for some bad passive poetry activities/prompts!
