River Monsters to play Saturday night, kicking off big weekend
Saturday’s Dairyland League game between Rhinelander and Whittlesey at Stafford Field has been moved to 6 p.m. The game was originally scheduled to be played at noon but a later start time was granted by Rhinelander at Whittlesey’s request. The changed start time was confirmed Tuesday evening.
It will kick off a busy final weekend for the Monsters who sit in fifth place in the Dairyland Large Division standings, despite being only two games out of first place. Last Sunday’s results in Dairyland League play did not help the River Monsters as Marshfield upset first-place Everest, 7-5 and Whittlesey swept a doubleheader from Wisconsin Rapids 7-3 and 6-4.
That put Everest (7-3) in first in the Dairyland after Sunday’s play, ahead of Marshfield (6-3), Wisconsin Rapids (6-4), Whittlesey (6-5) and Rhinelander. Everest traveled to Wisconsin Rapids and Marshfield hosted Merrill (1-8) Wednesday in games that concluded after press time for today’s edition.
Rhinelander will close out the Dairyland League season Sunday in a noon game at Minocqua (3-6). The River Monsters could conceivably finish anywhere between tied for first and sixth in the standings, depending on how the week’s games shake out. Rhinelander’s record and finish within the Dairyland Large will determine if the team advances to the WBA playoffs. The field for the tournament will be announced in early August with regionals taking place Aug. 9-11.
