Rhinelander man accused of possessing child pornography
By River News Staff
A 30-year-old Rhinelander man has been charged with two counts of possession of child pornography, a Class D felony.
Caleb James Meyer made his initial appearance in Oneida County Circuit Court last Friday afternoon at which time a $3,000 cash bond was set.
According to Oneida County district attorney Jillian Pfeifer, law enforcement received a cyber tip that led them to the defendant. A search warrant was executed at his home and his cellphone was seized, she added.
“There was child pornography located on that cellphone,” she told Judge Mike Bloom. “There was multiple images and videos (depicting young children).”
When given an opportunity to address the court on the issue of bond, Meyer asked for mercy.
“I apologize for my actions,” he said. “I would appreciate it if I would be eligible for bond. This is not me. I’m very upset with what has happened. I just ask for mercy.”
Meyer also indicated that he thought he was being represented by a public defender and very much wanted to confer with an attorney.
Bloom indicated that he was somewhat familiar with the case as he reviewed the search warrant application.
“The forensic evidence available in support of charges such as this is relatively strong evidence,” he added, noting that the charge carries a mandatory prison term.
If he posts bond, Meyer may not leave the state or have any unsupervised contact with minors. He is also prohibited from using devices that are capable of connecting to the internet.
An adjourned initial appearance was set for Friday, July 19.
Class D felonies are punishable by up to 25 years in prison with a mandatory minimum of three years.
