RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Jan. 30


Boys’ basketball: Rhinelander 64, Three Lakes 51


The Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team got 28 points from Will Gretzinger and rode a hot start to a 64-51 victory over Three Lakes at home on Tuesday night.


The Hodags hit six 3s — including four by Gretzinger — over the first 10 minutes of the game to build a 25-8 lead and maintained it from there. Rhinelander led 36-22 at the break and the lead never got any closer than nine in the second half. 


Seth Nofftz scored 12 points for Rhinelander while James Heck chipped in nine. Tyler Janikowski had 20 points and nine rebounds for Three Lakes while Jared Kaufman had 13 points and 11 rebounds. 


Rhinelander (10-6, 6-1 Great Northern) travels to Medford on Thursday.


Girls’ basketball: Rhinelander 63, Three Lakes 47


The Rhinelander High School girls’ basketball team pulled away late in the second half and defeated Three Lakes 63-47 at home Tuesday night. 


Leading 49-43 with 4:22 to go, the Hodags responded off a pair of missed Three Lakes free throws with a 3 from Leah Jamison and three straight transition baskets off of steals that sparked a closing 14-4 run for the Hodags. 


Lily Treder recorded her fifth straight game with 19 or more points, scoring a game-high 20, leading for Hodag in double figures. Aubryn Clark had 19, Vivian Lamers and 11 and Morgan Van Zile had 10. 


Kylee Wilson paced Three Lakes with 18 points while Jenna Erikson added 10. 


Rhinelander (14-5, 8-1 Great Northern) travels to Tomahawk on Friday.


Boys’ hockey: Lakeland 5, Rhinelander 1


The RHS boys’ hockey team dropped the opening round of the Great Northern Conference hockey tournament at Lakeland 5-1 on Tuesday night. 


The T-Birds opened the game with three goals in the first 9 1/2 minutes to take control. Timber Cronauer scored a power play goal for the Hodags, who trailed 3-1 after a period and 4-1 after two. 


Lakeland outshot Rhinelander 33-13 in the game. Tyler Kimmerling made 28 saves in the loss. 


The Hodags (4-13-0, 1-7-0 Great Northern) travel to Shawano on Thursday. 


Gymnastics: Rhinelander 104.0, Lakeland 79.05


The Rhinelander High School gymnastics team scored its first dual meet victory since the 2021-22 season, defeating Lakeland 104-79.05 Tuesday night in Minocqua. 


The Hodags took first in every event. Samantha Aschenbrenner won the balance beam (7.4), the uneven bars (5.8) and took first in the individual all-around with a 27.4. Alexis Smith was tops on the floor exercise (7.75) and second on the vault (8.1) as she took third in the all-around. Karly Gillingham won the vault (8.1) for the Hodags. 


Rhinelander (1-2 GNC Small) returns to action Saturday in the Marshfield Invite. 


Alpine Skiing: RHS/NPHS boys 3rd/4, girls 3rd/4, Northern Conference Meet No. 3.


Both the Rhinelander/Northland Pines boys’ and girls’ Alpine Ski teams took third on Saturday in the third Northern Conference meet of the season at Mt. Ashwabay in Bayfield. 


Ben Olson scored runner-up finishes in giant slalom and Super G as he finished second overall on the day. Lukas Bishop was ninth and Jason Linn took 11th for the Hodags. Eliana Conrad led a group of five Hodag girls in top 20, taking 13th. 


Owen Repenshek won three of the six runs to take first in boys’ snowboarding while Isaiah Willoughby finished third. Sydney Sarkauskas took third in girls’ snowboarding. 


The Hodags will host the fourth round of the Northern Conference Saturday at Ski Brule in Iron River, Mich.
