RHS Sports recap: Saturday, Jan. 27
Boys’ swimming: Rhinelander 3rd/19, Shorewood Invite
The Rhinelander High School boys’ swim team took on many of the top programs in Division 2 on Saturday, taking third in the 19-team Small School State Invite at Shorewood.
The Hodags posted nine top-five finishes in the event. Individually, Shawn Denis had third-place swims in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100 breaststroke and Zacha King was third in the 100 backstroke. Samson Shinners was fourth in the 200 individual medley and fifth in the 100 freestyle. Mathias Fugle took fourth in the 100 freestyle.
The Hodags also finished in the top three in all three relays — placing second in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle and third in the 400 freestyle.
Rhinelander is back in action Friday night as it looks to claim its sixth straight GNC title at Medford.
Gymnastics: Rhinelander 8th/10, Antigo Invite
The Rhinelander High School gymnastics team posed a score of 106.65 points as it finished eighth in the 10-team Julie Langseth Memorial Saturday in Antigo.
Freshman Samantha Aschenbrenner had the top-placing performance on the day, as she finished 23rd on balance beam with a 7.75. She was also the team’s top performer on uneven bars (39th, 5.55) as she finished 24th in the individual all-around (27.75).
Alexis Smith had the highest individual score for the Hodags on the day. She took 25th in the vault with an 8.1. She and Karly Gillingham tied for the team-high on floor exercise, finishing 29th with a 7.75.
Junior Wendy Fronk was 25th in the all-around with a 27.05. Gillingham was 27th in the all-around and Smith took 28th.
The Hodags (0-2 GNC Small) are back in action at Lakeland on Tuesday.
