RHS sports recap: Thursday, Jan. 25
Boys’ hockey: Lakeland 5, Rhinelander 2
The Rhinelander High School boys’ hockey team fell to Lakeland 5-2 Thursday night in Minocqua, to close out Great Northern Conference regular season play.
Though the Hodags were outshot 54-10 in the contest, Rhinelander got with in a goal on a Joey Belanger goal early in the third period. Lakeland would answer quickly, however, and add one more to pull away. Karter Massey also scored for the Hodags, who trailed 2-0 after a period and 3-1 after two.
Tyler Kimmerling made 49 saves in defeat.
The Hodags (4-12-0, 1-6-0 Great Northern) will face Lakeland again Tuesday in Minocqua to kick off the Great Northern Conference tournament.
Alpine skiing: RHS/NP boys 2nd/4, girls 3rd/5, NC Meet No. 2
The Rhinelander/Northland Pines Alpine ski team duplicated its team results from the season opener, taking second in the boys’ division and third in the girls’ division of the Northern Conference race Thursday at Granite Peak in Wausau.
The Hodag boys placed four in the top 12, led by Jason Linn in fifth, Lukas Bishop was seventh, Holden Schmitz was eighthing and Ben Olson finished 12th.
Maddie Ewan based the Hodag girls in 11th, Lyndsey Hoerchler was 12th, Aila Bergman finished 14th and Karlie Yunkers was 18th.
Snowboarding results from Thursday had not been published by the conference as of this posting.
The Hodags will take their snowboarders down to Tyrol Basin in Mount Horeb for an invite on Saturday, while the entire team will return to action this coming Tuesday in the third Northern Conference race of the season at Mt. Ashwabay.
