RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Jan. 23
Boys’ basketball: Wisconsin Rapids 74, Rhinelander 66
Wisconsin Rapids hit 14 3-pointers on Tuesday and inched away from the Hodags in the second half to win 74-66 at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
The Hodags led 36-32 at half but fell to 0-5 on the year against the Wisconsin Valley Conference with the loss. Sean Roenius and Jordan Szelagowski each scored 21 to lead Rapids. Will Gretzinger had 16 points to lead three Hodags in double figures. Truman Lamers had 15 and James Heck had 10.
Rhinelander (8-6, 5-1 Great Northern) travels to Northland Pines on Friday.
Girls’ basketball: Stevens Point 57, Rhinelander 47
The RHS girls’ basketball team fell at Stevens Point in non-conference play 57-47 on Tuesday night.
The Panthers, led by 24 points from freshman Jada Seubert, had a 26-17 lead at the half and maintained a 6-to-12 point lead much of the second.
Lily Treder scored 26 to lead the Hodags. She was the only Hodag in double figures.
Rhinelander (11-5, 6-1 Great Northern) hosts Northland Pines on Friday.
Boys’ hockey: Antigo 7, Rhinelander 3
Three goals in the final eight minutes of regulation doomed the RHS boys’ hockey team in a 7-3 loss to Antigo in Great Northern Conference play Tuesday at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.
Eli Kassler scored five times for the Robins, who led 2-1 after a period and 3-2 after two periods. The Hodags got within 4-3 on a Joey Belanger power play goal early in the third, but Kassler scored twice more after that and Owen Dickman added a late goal for the Robins.
Belanger scored twice for Rhinelander and Dylan Shefveland added a goal. The Hodags outshot the Robins 40-27, but came out on the losing end. Tyler Kimmerling made 20 saves in the loss.
Rhinelander (4-11-0, 1-5-0 Great Northern) travel to Lakeland on Thursday.
Boys’ swimming: Rhinelander 107, Tomahawk 32
The Rhinelander High School boys’ swim team won all 11 events in its final dual of the season, beating Tomahawk 107-32 in a non-conference dual at the Heck Family Community Pool.
Brock Arrowood and Mathias Fugle were four-event winners for the Hodags. Arrowood won the 50-yard freestyle, the 500 freestyle and was on the Hodags’ winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. Fugle took the 100 butterfly and was on all three winning relays.
Samson Shinners added a win in the 200 freestyle, Shawn Denis won the 200 individual medley, Dolan O’Malley on the 100 freestyle, Zacha King claimed the 100 backstroke and Charlie Antonuk won the 100 breaststroke.
Rhinelander travels to Shorewood on Saturday for the Small School State Invite.
Wrestling: Rhinelander 1-2, Laona/Wabeno/Three Lakes quad
The Hodags went 1-2 on Tuesday night in the Laona/Wabeno/Three Lakes quad. Rhinelander dropped the first dual to Iron Mountain, Mich. 36-30, beat Florence 36-11 and fell to Laona/Wabeno/Three Lakes 42-30.
There were a number of forfeits in each match resulting in a total of 11 contested bouts on the night. The Hodags won five of them. Avrom Barr earned pins against Iron Mountain and Laona/Wabeno, Anthony Boldt got a pin against Iron Mountain and Maxi Singhammer and Gavin Dotter earned pins against Laona/Wabeno.
The Hodags (5-9, 1-4 Great Northern) are idle until the Great Northern Conference meet Feb. 3 in Antigo.
