Girls’ hockey: Pines co-op splits games
The Northland Pines girls’ hockey co-op defeated Medford for the third time this season, defeating the Raiders 5-2 in Eagle River on Thursday night. It was part of a pair of games that the Eagle co-op split late last week.
Mallory Schmidt scored three times in the contest and Lakeland’s Taylor Heleniak scored twice. Rhinelander skaters Emalee Detienne and Lily Pequet each recorded assists in the victory as the Eagles led 2-0 after a period and 3-0 after two periods.
The Eagle co-op then traveled to take on the Wisconsin Valley Union co-op in Marshfield on Saturday, dropping a 5-2 decision. Pines spotted Valley Union a 4-0 lead in that contest, with Kaydence McGregor completing a hat trick 1:21 into the third period. Heleniak and Schmidt scored to bring Pines within 4-2 but Valley Union added an insurance goal late in the period. Pequet added another assist in defeat.
The Pines co-op (4-10-0), which absorbed the defunct Rhinelander/Antigo/Lakeland Northern Edge co-op this season, faces the Central Wisconsin Storm this evening in Wausau.
