RHS Sports recap: Saturday, Jan. 20
Boys’ hockey: East/Merrill 6, Rhinelander 5, OT
Zach Pagel scored four times, including the game-winner 1:58 into the extra session as the Wausau East/Merrill co-op knocked off Rhinelander 6-5 in overtime Saturday in Merrill.
The Hodags rallied from down 3-1 in the second to tie the game at 3. Gavin Denis scored three times in the game, including the go-ahead goal for Rhinelander with 5:32 remaining in regulation, but Pagel answered 10 seconds later to tie and the Hodags were unable to kill off a major power play in overtime.
Joey Belanger and Dylan Shefveland also scored for Rhinelander, which was outshot 41-29 in the game. Tyler Kimmerling made 35 saves in the loss.
The Hodags (4-10-0, 1-4-0-0 Great Northern) host Antigo on Tuesday.
Wrestling: Rhinelander 17th/20, Wausau East Invite
The Rhinelander High School wrestling team brought a smaller crew to Wausau East on Saturday, competing with only six wrestlers as they placed 17th out of 20 teams in the Lumberjack Invite.
Logan Schwinger scored a sixth-place finish in the 175-pound weight class, going 2-2 on the day with a pair of pins. The only other Hodag wrestler to win a match was Cyrus Leisure, who took 13th at 144.
The Hodags are back in action Tuesday in a triangular in Three Lakes.
