Schedule update: Hodag swim, hockey pick up contests

Both the Rhinelander High School boys’ swim and boys’ hockey teams have picked up contests this weekend in light of last weekend’s snowstorm that canceled events for both squads.

The Hodag swim team has added a home dual against Ashwaubenon that will take place this evening at the Heck Family Community Pool. The Hodags were scheduled to compete against the Jaguars last Friday in the snowed-out Appleton North Invite. The meet will get underway at 5 p.m.

Meanwhile the Hodag boys’ hockey team will play at Wausau East/Merrill on Saturday afternoon. The Hodags were supposed to take part in the East/Merrill invite last weekend before its was called off due to snow. Face-off is set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Smith Center in Merrill.

Elsewhere, the weather continues to play havoc with the Rhinelander/Northland Pines Alpine Ski team’s season, which saw its meet at Christie Mountain in Bruce on Monday postponed due to cold temperatures. That meet will now take place on Monday, Jan. 22 and kick off a condensed five-race Northern Conference schedule. 

The Granite Peak race originally scheduled for Jan. 22 has been moved to Thursday, Jan. 25. The Snow River race that was originally scheduled to kick off the Northern Conference season Jan. 9 has been moved to the last race of the season Tuesday, Feb. 6 and will nix the Hodags’ plans to travel to the Mt. La Crosse Cup.

Races at Mt. Ashwabay Jan. 30 and Ski Brule Feb. 3 remained unchanged in the updated schedule.

Also the Hodag Nordic ski team confirmed late Sunday that it will take place in the skate portion of the Iola Invite this coming Saturday. That’s a make-up race for the Hodags, who were scheduled to host the Hodag Nordic Challenge at CAVOC this weekend before that event was nixed due to insufficient snow.
