Volunteers needed for upcoming Ski for Light in Rhinelander
Ski for Light (SFL) is coming to Rhinelander for its 49th Annual International Week from Jan. 28 to Feb. 4, 2024.
SFL is an all volunteer nonprofit organization that holds an annual, week-long event where blind and mobility impaired adults are taught the basics of cross-country skiing.
“The mission of SFL is to enhance the quality of life and independence of visually or mobility-impaired adults through a program of cross-country skiing,” organizers stated in a press release. “Guides are paired with a cross country skier to navigate the ski trails while learning classic cross country skiing techniques. After skiing, SFL organizes activities to engage the skiers with the local community by holding activities such as technique sessions, listening to fellow skiers talk about skills they have or go on a trip to see area attractions.”
The SFL skiers and guides will use the Northwoods Nordic Ski Trails for their daily adventures along with a race at the end of the week. Lodging will be provided, and special sessions (i.e., speakers, silent auctions, technique lessons, etc.) will be held at the Quality Inn/Convention Center and the AmericInn. A special night with games and activities will be held Thursday, Feb. 1 at the Hodag Dome.
According to organizers, there are still more than 20 volunteer positions to fill, especially at the Hodag Dome Activities night. Due to unforeseen circumstances, some SFL guides have had to cancel, taking SFL from having a surplus, to a shortage of guides. This leaves SFL unable to provide a full-time guide for each of the blind skiers attending SFL Week.
