RHS Sports recap: Thursday, Jan. 11
Boys’ hockey: Mosinee 6, Rhinelander 3
Mosinee’s constant offensive pressure finally proved too much to overcome on Thursday night as the Indians doubled up the Rhinelander High School boys’ hockey team 6-3 at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.
The score was tied at 3 late in the second period, but Mosinee’s Spencer Swiderski scored on the power play with 1.5 seconds remaining in the period and Mosinee tacked on two more unanswered goals in the third as it outshot Rhinelander 47-17.
Joey Belanger scored twice for Rhinelander, giving him 99 goals for his career (including postseason). Gavin Denis also scored for the Hodags.
Rhinelander (4-8-0, 1-4-0-0 Great Northern) is scheduled to face Jeffers, Mich. Friday to kick off the East/Merrill tournament.
Boys’ swimming: Rhinelander 104, Antigo 52
The Rhinelander High School boys’ swim team won 10 of 11 events on Thursday and cruised to a 104-52 victory in an exhibition dual meet at Antigo.
All nine Hodag swimmers contributed to at least one victory. Charlie Antonuk won all four of his events, claiming the 200-meter freestyle, the 100 freestyle and swimming on a pair of winning relays. Zacha King and Brock Arrowood each had three wins. King took the 400 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, individually, while Arrowood won the 100 breaststroke. Mathias Fugle won the 200 individual medley and Shawn Denis claimed the 50 freestyle.
Rhinelander was scheduled to compete in the Appleton North Invite on Friday, but that meet was canceled due to snow. The Hodags return to action next Thursday with a triangular against Medford and Tomahawk in Tomahawk.
Wrestling: Rhinelander 42, Antigo 36; Lakeland 42, Rhinelander 36
The Rhinelander High School wrestling team picked up its first dual meet win in Great Northern Conference play in nearly two years on Thursday as it split a pair of contests by matching 42-36 scores, beating Antigo and falling to Lakeland in Tomahawk.
Owen Kurtz broke a 36-all tie in the Antigo match, winning the 215-pound bout by pin over Jordy Pregler to secure the dual meet win. The Hodags were unable to make up a 12-point deficit in the final two bouts against Lakeland. Kurtz and Reid Schultz won by decision, but both needed pins for the Hodags to tie.
Kurtz and Schultz were two of six Hodags who won both of their bouts on Thursday. Robert Schramke, Dresden Klaver, Cyrus Leisure and Logan Schwinger all recorded pins in both of their match.
Rhinelander (1-3 Great Northern) is scheduled to head to Valders for an invite on Saturday.
