RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Jan. 9


Boys’ basketball: Mosinee 70, Rhinelander 58


The Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team was not able to overcome a 15-point second half deficit and fell to Mosinee 70-58 Tuesday night in a battle for first place in the GNC at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium. 


The Hodags trailed 32-26 at the break, but Mosinee scored the first nine points of the second half and held on after Rhinelander cut the lead to six with less than two minutes to play. 


Devon Feck made five 3-pointers and led the Hodags with 21 points off the bench. Will Gretzinger had 15 and Truman Lamers chipped in 10. Landen Thomer had 17 points and 12 rebounds for Mosinee, leading four Indians who scored in double digits. 


Rhinelander (7-5, 4-1 Great Northern) travels to Medford on Friday. 


Girls’ basketball: Rhinelander 43, Mosinee 42


The Rhinelander High School girls’ basketball team nearly watched a 14-point second half lead evaporate, but held on to win 43-42 at Mosinee Tuesday night in a battle for second place in the GNC. 


Rhinelander led 41-27 with 10:25 remaining, but made only one field goal the rest of the way — a Vivian Lamers finish in transition that made it 43-37 with 1:40 left. Two steals led to a make by Kaitlyn Selle and a 3 by Taelyn Jirschele that cut Rhinelanedr lead to one with 50 seconds left. 


Mosinee missed three chances at the go-ahead basket following another Rhinelander turnover before the Hodags secured the rebound with 8 seconds left and were able to salt the game away.


Lily Treder hit five 3s in the contest and had a game-high 17 points for Rhinelander. Leah Jamison had nine and Aubryn Clark had eight. Selle led Mosinee with 11 points as the Indians shot only 23.8% (16 of 67) from the field. 


Rhinelander (10-4, 5-1 Great Northern) hosts Medford on Friday.


Boys’ hockey: D.C. Everest 4, Rhinelander 3


The Rhinelander High School boys’ hockey team could not overcome struggles late in the first period as it fell to D.C. Everest 4-3 Tuesday night at the Rhinelander Ice Arena. 


Joey Belanger opened the scoring for Rhinelander, but Everest scored three times over the final 4:20 of the first period to take a 3-1 lead after one. Zach Edyvean scored on the power player in the the second to make it 3-2, but Everest answered again early in the third before Belanger scored his second of the night to make it 4-3 with 5:46 to play. 


Rhinelander was unable to find the equalizer despite pulling goalie Tyler Kimmerling for an extra attacker over the final two minutes. Shots finished 40-36 in favor of Rhinelander. Kimmerling made 32 saves in the loss. 


Rhinelander (4-7-0, 1-3-0-0 Great Northern) hosts Mosinee on Thursday.
