RHS Sports recap: Saturday, Jan. 6
Boys’ swimming: Rhinelander 2nd/12, Ashwaubenon Invite
The Rhinelander High School boys’ swim team won six events on Saturday as it was the runner-up in the 12-team Jaguar Invitational at Ashwaubenon.
The Hodags took all three relays. Zacha King, Shawn Denis, Brock Arrowood and Mathias Fugle won the 200-yard medley relay; Arrowood, Samson Shinners, Denis and Fugle won the 200 freestyle relay and Dolan O’Malley, Judson O’Malley, King and Shinners won the 400 freestyle relay.
Denis and Fugle finished 1-2 in the 50 freestyle. Fugle won the 100 freestyle and Shinners claimed the 200 freestyle. King added a runner-up finish in the 100 backstroke and tied for third in the 100 butterfly. Denis took third in the 100 breaststroke.
Rhinelander returns to action this coming Thursday in a dual meet at Antigo.
Wrestling: Rhinelander 18th/26. Bluejay Challenge
The Rhinelander High School wrestling team took 18th in the 26-team Bluejay Challenge in Merrill on Saturday.
Hodag senior Owen Kurtz improved to 22-1 on the season as he took the championship in the 285-pound weight class, defeating Crandon’s Connor Lawrence 9-1 in the finals. Rhinelander also got a fifth-place finish from Logan Schwinger at 175, a seventh from Reid Schultz at 285 and an eighth from Gavin Ostermann at 150.
Mya Swanson split her matches and took fifth in the girls’ 126-pound bracket.
The Hodags are back in action this coming Thursday in a GNC quad against Antigo and Lakeland in Tomahawk.
Gymnastics: Rhinelander 7th/7, Wisconsin Rapids Invite
The Rhinelander High School gymnastics team turned it its second-best score of the season, taking seventh on Saturday in the Charlie Martin Invite at Wisconsin Rapids, totaling 107.575 points.
Sam Aschenbrenner had the Hodags’ top scorer on uneven bars (6.25) and led the team with a 17th place finish in the individual all-around (28.975). Alexis Smith took 10th on the vault (8.4) while Karly Gillingham had the team’s top score on balance beam (7.925) and floor exercise (7.725).
Wendy Fronk finished 20th in the all-around for Rhinelander while Smith took 23rd.
The Hodags will return to action Jan. 16 in a GNC Small dual meet at Antigo.
