Gene M. Funk

Gene M. Funk, age 92, of Rhinelander, died on December 30, 2023 at the Rhinelander Aspirus Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 3, 1931 in Crivitz, the son of Clarence and Molly (Schwartz) Funk. Gene was raised in Crivitz and attended schools there graduating from the Crivitz High School in 1949. He then attended Michigan Tech and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering. He began his employment with the Wisconsin DOT in 1958 and in 1960 he accepted a position with the DOT in Rhinelander. He moved his family, and his house, to Rhinelander in 1960 where they have lived since. 

He was very proud of having moved his house to Rhinelander from Crivitz and it remained their residence until his death. He married his wife Margaret "Peggy" on September 7, 1956, in Wausau, and God blessed them with over 67 years of marriage. Gene retired from the DOT in 1996.

Gene was a longtime member of the St. Mark Lutheran Church in Rhinelander. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. playing cards, classic cars and woodworking. Both he and his wife enjoyed watching all sports especially those where their boys and grandchildren were participating.

Gene is survived by his sons David (Nancy) Funk and Dean (Jill) Funk, his grandchildren Nicole (Tyler) Loftus, Colton Funk, Derek (Tessa) Funk, Connor Funk and Carson Funk, his great-grandchildren Jackson and Ava, his sisters Janet Kaucic and Sandy Simpson, nieces, nephews, other family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Peggy on December 17, 2023, his son Darrin, his parents and his brother Clarence.
