A Manitowish Waters woman died early Thursday morning following a two-vehicle head-on collision in Hazelhurst.

According to a press release issued by Oneida County sheriff’s captain Tyler Young, the sheriff’s office responded to a call reporting an accident on U.S. Highway 51 near South Blue Lake Road at approximately 6 a.m.

Extrication equipment was requested to recover both drivers from the vehicles.

Helicopters were dispatched to the scene “due to apparent injuries” and Hwy. 51 was closed from approximately 6:30 to 9:30 a.m.

“Initial reports from the witnesses on scene advise that the southbound vehicle crossed over the centerline and the northbound vehicle could not avoid the crash,” Young said in the press release. “The driver of the southbound vehicle was transported by helicopter but died upon arrival at the medical facility.  The other driver was also transported by helicopter to a medical facility.”

On Friday morning, the sheriff’s office announced that the deceased had been identified as Marisa A. Hagemann, 45, of Manitowish Waters. The identity of the other driver was not released.
