Gertrude Helen Franti

Gertrude Helen Franti, age 78, of Rhinelander, passed away on February 15, 2024, with her loving & dedicated husband by her side. Gertrude was born on December 14, 1945, in South Porcupine, Ontario, Canada. Born the daughter of Oliver and Irja Kangas, she attended grade school in South Porcupine, Canada. Her later studies brought her to the United States where she earned her bachelor’s degree in special education at Northern Michigan University. She later continued her education at the University of Iowa while earning her master’s degree. 

During her tenure at NMU, she met the love of her life, William Franti. They were married July 17, 1971.

Gertrude started her teaching career in Prescott, Mich. before moving to Cadillac, Mich. After getting married, she moved to Superior, where she first became a mother. She then taught in Cuba City before eventually moving to Iowa where her second child was born and she eventually retired from teaching in Jesup, Iowa.

Gertrude's hobbies included camping, reading, traveling, swimming, visiting with family & friends, playing & walking with her dog, and enjoying her flowers. 

She spent many weekends camping with her family as she loved being outdoors.

Gertrude is survived by her husband William, her children Paul and Niel, and her grandchildren Ryan, Bradley, and Marc. She was preceded in death by her father Oliver and her mother Irja.
