Boys’ hockey: Tomahawk 5, Rhinelander 3
The eighth-seeded Rhinelander High School boys’ hockey team kept things interesting against top-seeded Tomahawk on Thursday night but, ultimately, the Hodags couldn’t overcome a late first-period surge in a 5-3 loss to the Hatchets in the WIAA playoff opener at SARA Park.
After the Hodags scored first on a Riley Squires goal, the Hatchets scored four unanswered goals, including two in the a 33-second span late in the first period, to take control.
Gavin Denis scored for the Hodags in the second period and Dylan Shefveland had a power play goal for the Hodags in the third. Rhinelander was outshot 41-19 in the contest. Tyler Kimmerling made 36 saves in defeat.
Rhinelander finished the season with a 7-15-0 record.
