Boys’ basketball: Rhinelander 65, Lakeland 55
The Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team fended off Lakeland down the stretch Friday night, defeating the T-Birds 65-55 at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
The Hodags outscored the T-Birds 8-0 over the final 45 seconds to secure the victory. Will Gretzinger led the way with 25 points, including a pair of buckets in the final seconds to clinch it. James Heck added 10 points and seven rebounds for Rhinelander.
Danny Gahler paced Lakeland with 17 points and 11 rebounds while Jalend Cobb added 14 points.
Rhinelander (12-9, 8-2 Great Northern) remained a game behind Mosinee in the GNC chase with the victory. The Hodags travel to Shawano for a non-conference game on Tuesday.
Girls’ basketball: Lakeland 60, Rhinelander 34
Lakeland stifled the Rhinelander offense, particularly in the first half, and defeated the Hodag girls’ basketball team 60-34 in a battle for the Gras Northern Conference title on Friday night.
The T-Birds never trailed and used an 8-0 run to take a 26-9 lead at the half. Rhinelander got no closer than 17 in the second half.
Aubryn Clark had 16 for the Hodags while Leah Jamison chipped in 12. Kristian Ouimette had 25 for lead three T-Birds in double figures.
Rhinelander (16-6, 9-2 Great Northern) travels to Shawano on Tuesday.
