Boys’ hockey: Rhinelander 3, Northland Pines 2


The Rhinelander High School boys’ hockey team scored three times in the third period Tuesday night to come from behind and up end Northland Pines 3-2 in GNC tournament play at the Eagle River Sports Arena.


Riley Squires tied the game on his first career goal early in the third period, Gavin Denis put the Hodags ahead and Timber Cronauer scored what proved to be the game-winner on the power play midway through the period. 


Shots were 37-24 in favor of the Hodags. Tyler Kimmerling made 22 saves in the win. 


The Hodags (7-13-0, 2-7-0 Great Northern) will face Antigo for fifth place in the GNC tournament Saturday in Mosinee.


Boys’ basketball: Stevens Point 69, Rhinelander 54


The Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team could not overcome a slow start against fourth-ranked (D1) Stevens Point, falling to the Panthers 69-54 Tuesday at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.


The Panthers closed outscored the Hodags 29-7 over the final 11-plus minutes of the first half to lead 42-18 at the break and extended the lead to as many as 29 early in the second before the Hodags slowly chipped away.


Truman Lamers and Will Gretzinger each scored 14 to lead Rhinelander. Grant Chandonais had 17 to lead four Panthers in double figures.


Rhinelander (11-9, 7-2 Great Northern) hosts Lakeland on Friday.


Gymnastics: Rhinelander 111.025, Mosinee 106.25


The Rhinelander High School gymnastics team got back to .500 in GNC Small division play and posted its second-highest score of the season Tuesday night in a 111.025-106.25 victory over Mosinee at the YMCA of the Northwoods. 


The Hodags posted some of their best marks of the season on vault and uneven bars and outscored Mosinee in three of the four events on Tuesday. 


Karly Gillingham scored top-three finishes in three events and led the Hodags in the all-around, finishing in the runner-up spot with a 28.95. Wendy Fronk was second on balance beam, third on the floor exercise and fourth in the all-around. Sam Aschenbrenner was fifth in the all-around and Alexis Smith was the runner-up on the vault. 


The Hodags return to action Saturday in the Ashland Valentines Invite.


Alpine skiing: RHS/Pines boys 4th/4, girls 4th/4 NC Meet No. 5


The Rhinelander/Northland Pines Alpine ski and snowboard team closed the Northern Conference season with a tricky day on the slopes, finishing fourth in both boys’ and girls’ downhill in the conference finale at Snow River in Bessemer, Mich.


Jason Linn had the best finish for the Hodag boys in eighth place on the day while Maddie Ewan led the Hodag girls in 12th. Sydney Sarkauskas won girls’ snowboarding for the Hodags while Eli Repenshek was third in boys’ snowboard.


Both the Hodag boys’ and girls’ Alpine ski teams clinched state berths. The Hodag boys were second and the Hodag girls were third in the final conference standings. Ben Olson (fourth) and Linn (eighth) were in the top 10 overall in boys’ skiing. Repenshek finished third overall in boys’ snowboarding and Sarkauskas was third overall in girls’ snowboarding. 


Next up is the WIARA State Meet Feb. 16-18 in La Crosse.
