June Lego, age 88, of Rhinelander, died on Jan. 31, 2024, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on May 29, 1935, in Wellingborough, England, the daughter of Thomas Leslie and Mary Alice (Murray) Jackson. She attended schools in England including the beginnings of her nursing school. She came to the United States in her early 20s and finished her nursing school in Dayton, Ohio. It was in Dayton that she met the love of her life, Robert Lego. They were married in 1957.
June started her career in Oshkosh before moving to Rhinelander where she was employed by St. Mary's Hospital until her retirement. During those years she was also very involved, with the local Lions Club, in the Wisconsin Eye Bank. Rhinelander was one of the greatest contributors to the Wisconsin Eye Bank and June was a big part ot that for many years, both as an enucleator and educator.
June's hobbies were quilting, traveling, swimming and the Silver Sneakers at the Y, meeting her friends at Dunkin Donuts for a latte, and sitting outside on her patio enjoying her beautiful flowers.
June is survived by her children Christine (Timothy) Newtols and Richard (Tracy) Lego, her grandchildren R.J., Masen, Kelly (Daniel) Maloney and Paige Mangum (Allie), her great-granddaughter Monroe Maloney, her sisters Janet Garland and Pat (Alan) Head and her nieces and nephews in England. She was preceded in death by her husband, her granddaughter Makayla Lego, her brother Stephen Jackson and her nephews Nathan and Adam Jackson.
June's family would like to thank all of her friends for all that they did for her, which allowed her to stay in her own home all these years, and to Aspirus Hospice for all of their caring help
A celebration of June's life will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, with memorial services following at noon, on Friday, Feb. 9, 2024, at the Carlson Funeral Home. Chaplain John Uhlarik will be officiating. Interment will be in the Union Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a memorial is being established in June's and any gifts may be directed to her family.
