RHS Sports recap: Saturday, Feb. 3
Boys’ basketball: Oshkosh West 52, Rhinelander 50
The Rhinelander High School dropped another close game on Saturday, falling to Oshkosh West 52-50 in a game played at UW-Stevens Point’s Quandt Fieldhouse.
Will Gretzinger led the Hodags with 18 points while Devon Feck had 14.Dyland Taylor paced Oshkosh West with 15.
Rhinelander (11-8, 7-2 Great Northern) hosts Stevens Point on Tuesday.
Boys’ hockey: Rhinelander 5, Ashland 1
Gavin Denis recorded a hat trick and Tyler Kimmerling made 25 saves Saturday afternoon as the RHS boys’ hockey team won its regular season home finale 5-1 over the Ashland Oredockers at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.
Denis had the Hodags’ first three goals and Karter Massey added a power play tally as Rhinelander led 2-0 after a period and 4-0 after two periods. Joey Belanger tacked on a goal in the third. Ashland’s Wyatt Melek broke up the shutout on a goal with 3:30 remaining.
Rhinelander outshot Ashland 27-26 in the contest.
The Hodags (6-13-0, 1-7-0 Great Northern) face Northland Pines in the consolation semifinals of the GNC tournament Tuesday night in Eagle River.
Wrestling: Rhinelander 6th/6, GNC meet
The Hodags came away with three individual conference champions, but placed last as a team in the Great Northern Conference meet Saturday in Antigo.
Owen Kurtz was named GNC co-wrestler of the year after pinning Medford’s Braxton Weissmiller in overtime in the final round to secure a conference title at 215 pounds. It was Kurtz’s third conference championship.
Logan Schwinger won the title at 190 pounds and Reid Schultz pinned all five of his opponents to win the title at 285. Robert Schramke was the Hodags’ only other all-conference honoree, taking third at 132.
The Hodags will travel to Medford for WIAA regionals this coming Saturday.
Gymnastics: Rhinelander 6th/6, Marshfield Invite
The Hodag gymnasts team scored 107.175 points as it took sixth in the Marshfield Invite on Saturday.
Vault was the highlight of the day for the Hodags. Freshman Alexis Smith tied for fourth in the event with a season-high score of 8.55. Fellow freshman Karly Gillingham was right behind in eighth with an 8.5.
Gillingham added an 8.075 on the floor and led the Hodags, taking 14th in the individual all-around. Smith was 16th in the all-around. Samantha Aschenbrenner, who led the Hodags on balance beam and uneven bars, took 18th all-around.
The Hodags (1-2 GNC Small) host Mosinee on Tuesday.
Alpine Skiing: RHS/NP boys 2nd/4, girls 3rd/4, NC Meet No. 4
The Rhinelander/Northland Pines boys’ ski team was second and the Hodag girls took third Saturday as they hosted the fourth round of the Northern Conference season Saturday at Ski Brule in Iron River, Mich.
Ben Olson placed in the top four in all three events on Saturday as he took third in the boys’ skiing combined standings. Jason Linn was eight for the Hodags, Holden Schmitz took 11th and Eli Repenshek was 12th.
Eliana Conrad paced the Hodag girls in 11th place on the day, followed by Maddie Ewan in 12th, Aila Bergman in 15th and Karlie Yunkers in 19th.
Owen Repenshek swept all three runs of boardercross on Saturday to win the individual title in boys’ snowboarding, Marshal Durkee took third and Isaiah Willoughby was fifth. Sydney Sarkauskas took third in girls’ snowboard.
The conference season is slated to wrap up Tuesday at Snow River in Bessemer, Mich.
