Learn to play Kubb in the Hodag Dome
The School District of Rhinelander Community Education Program is offering a class that highlights an activity that is growing in popularity. Learn all about Kubb on Wednesday, Feb. 7, in the Hodag Dome.
Kubb (pronounced: koob) is a Scandinavian game where the object is to knock over wooden blocks, or kubbs, by throwing wooden batons at them. The ultimate goal is to knock over the kubbs on the opposite side, then knock over the king (kung) before the opponent does. Games can last from 5 minutes to over an hour. Kubb can be played on a variety of surfaces — grass, sand, snow and ice, or indoors on artificial turf. Mostly played as a backyard game, Kubb is an international sport. The US Kubb Championship is played in Eau Claire.
The class will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7 and is geared toward those age 14 and up. Kathy Ugo and Tom LaDue will serve as the instructors. Registration is $5 per person.

Registration open for Knights spring hockey
The Rhinelander Ice Association, announced registration is underway for the Northern Wisconsin Knights spring hockey, which will be held from March 25 to May 10 at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.
The program seeks players born between 2010 and 2017 for the seven-week session.
“In collaboration with a group of skilled coaches, we aim to elevate the experience of skill progression for youth hockey players in the Northern Wisconsin and surrounding areas,” the Knights stated on their informational webpage. “Think of the Wisconsin Northern Knights as a higher-level camp experience with possible opportunities to scrimmage or play games at an appropriate tier level this year. This program is not designed to compete with nearby AAA hockey clubs. Our mission is to provide high level coaching, intensive skill development opportunities, and to focus on age appropriate skill development. We want your skater to grow in skill development and confidence.”
All who register will be able to participate. Each team will have a dedicated development coach. Practices will be held after school hours on weekday, will be 1-to-2 hours in length and typically not more than two days per week.
No games or scrimmages are currently scheduled for the program, however some competitions may be added based on the spring/summer schedules of other area programs.
Peewee (U12) and Bantam (U14) level skaters are slated to practice Mondays and Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Squirts (U10) will practice Mondays and Wednesday from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. and Mites (U8) will practice Tuesdays and Thursday from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m.
