The School District of Rhinelander is making waves in educational innovation with a commitment to fostering the next generation of educators. Amid a nationwide shortage of teachers, Rhinelander has emerged as a beacon of hope, thanks to its comprehensive programming, strong community partnerships, and the remarkable growth of its Educators Rising Club, district officials said in a press release.

Addressing the educator shortage

“Across the United States, the teaching profession faces significant challenges — fewer individuals are entering the field, and many teachers are leaving the profession,” the release explains. “Recognizing these challenges, Rhinelander has embraced the mission of turning the tide by focusing on the positives of education and emphasizing the profound difference educators can make. With a district-wide mission of ‘Equity, Empowerment, and Excellence for All,’ Rhinelander is not just preparing students academically but also inspiring them to discover their passions, purpose, and plans for their futures. Among its most impactful initiatives is the effort to prepare students for careers in education through intentional programming, mentorship, and real-world experiences.”

The rise of the Educators Rising Club

One of the district’s shining stars is its Educators Rising Club, which has grown dramatically over the past three years to over 50 members. Open to all students interested in education — not just those pursuing teaching — this club provides a unique space for learners to explore their aspirations and build connections, the release notes.

Members of Educators Rising benefit from:

● Hands-on opportunities to mentor younger students.

● Career exploration activities, including Discovery Day events supported by Rhinelander Partners in Education.

● Guaranteed job interviews with the district upon completing a degree in education.

● An annual ceremony to honor future educators and celebrate their journey.

Collaborative pathways to success

Collaboration has been a cornerstone of Rhinelander’s success. The district has forged strong partnerships with Nicolet Area Technical College and UW-Stevens Point to create a seamless pipeline for students pursuing education careers. Through dual-credit courses like Child Development and Introduction to Teaching, students earn college credits while still in high school, gaining a head start in their educational journey.

Additionally, programs like the Youth Apprenticeship and Education Internship provide real-world experiences for high school students. These opportunities immerse students in classrooms, offering hands-on engagement with younger learners and allowing them to shadow experienced educators.

Mentorship and internships

Rhinelander’s mentoring program is another critical piece of its success, the release states. High school students in grades 10-12 earn elective credit while mentoring elementary school students. For two hours each morning, they assist classroom teachers and support young learners, earning 1/2 credit per semester. This experience allows students to explore their interest in working with children and adolescents.

New to the 2024-2025 school year, the Education Internship program offers senior students a deeper dive into the profession. Interns work four hours daily in elementary or middle schools, collaborate with teachers, attend staff meetings, and even teach lessons. Currently piloted by two students, this program sets the foundation for future participants.

Hodag Academies: A new era of pathways

The district’s innovative Hodag Academies, launching in the 2025-2026 school year, are set to take its education programming to new heights. Among the six career pathways is the Education & Training Academy, which will include specialized tracks in elementary education, early childhood education, and educational counseling. This pathway will integrate coursework, mentorship, and partnerships with institutions like UW-Stevens Point and Nicolet College, ensuring students graduate with the skills and experience to succeed, the release states.

Discovery Day events and community support

Through Discovery Day events, supported by the Rhinelander Partners in Education group, students explore careers in education by visiting local facilities such as the Youth Development Center, YMCA of the Northwoods, and elementary schools. These events include panels with RHS graduates now working in education, inspiring current students to follow similar paths.

Dual-credit and apprenticeship opportunities

The School District of Rhinelander pays for up to 18 college credits through programs like Start College Now and Early College Credit, in addition to offering two transcripted credit courses in the field of Education at Rhinelander High School. Students also participate in education-related Youth Apprenticeships, gaining practical experience through community partnerships.

Celebrating success and looking forward

“As the School District of Rhinelander continues to expand its initiatives, its vision remains clear: to empower students to make a difference now and in the future,” the release states. “By celebrating the positives of education, fostering partnerships, and offering robust career pathways, Rhinelander is proving that the future of education begins today. The intentional growth of the Educators Rising Club, combined with strategic partnerships and innovative programming, has solidified Rhinelander’s place as a leader in preparing future educators. This approach not only inspires students to pursue careers in education but also creates a ripple effect, ensuring the next generation of learners benefits from passionate, dedicated teachers.”
