Rhinelander Wrestling Club hosts tournament
The Rhinelander Wrestling Club debuted the new date for its Dave Arneson Memorial Youth Tournament, holding it Saturday, Dec. 21 in the Hodag Dome — one day after the Hodag Scramble for the Rhinelander High School wrestling team.
More than 220 wresters, including nearly 30 from Rhinelander, took part in the tournament. There were six Hodags who won their brackets — Forest Schmelling (1st-2nd, 57-58 lbs.), Saoirse Cichy (7th-8th 115-126), Tobias Webb (3rd-4th 73-76), Korbin Skubal (5th-6th 80-88), Tucker Whalen (Pre-K 49) and Connor Whalen (1st-2nd 54-55).

Middle school skiers in action
The Hodag Nordic middle school team took part in the WinMan Early Bird race in Winchester Saturday, Dec. 21. The Hodag boys were second out of three qualifying teams, edging Wausau by a point for the runner-up spot. The Hodag girls were fourth out of four teams.
Eighth grader Sam Loomis paced the Hodag boys, covering the roughly 2 1/2-kilometer course in 9 minutes, 47 seconds to finish in sixth out of a field of 18 skiers. Jacob MacFarland was eighth (10:00) and Alexander Rusch was 13th (10:50).
Seventh-grader Pearl Calhoun led the Hodag girls, coming home seventh in a field of 21 (10:08). Noelle Mayo finished ninth (10:32), Kelsie Skubal was 12th (10:42), Scarlet Hartmann was 15th (11:49) and Bekah Koch finished 20th (13:47).
