RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Dec. 17
Boys’ basketball: Rhinelander 76, Ashland 34
The Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team took care of Ashland at home Tuesday night, defeating the Oredockers 76-34 in non-conference play at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
After spotting the Oredockers an early 7-2 lead, the Hodags outscored Ashland 35-7 the rest of the first half to lead by 23 at the break and continued to pull away in the second.
Truman Lamers finished with 24 points to lead all scorers, including three Hodags in double figures. Devon Feck had 17 and Abe Gretzinger added 11 off the bench.
Rhinelander (5-0, 2-0 Great Northern) hosts Tomahawk on Friday.
Boys’ hockey: Pacelli 3, Rhinelander 2
Payton Ledocq scored twice, including the go-ahead goal 4:33 into the third period as Pacelli held off the Rhinelander High School boys’ hockey team 3-2 Tuesday night at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.
The Cardinals led 2-1 after a period, but the Hodags tied it in the second on Timber Cronauer’s second goal of the season. Dylan Shefveland had Rhinelander’s goal in the first.
The Hodags were unable to capitalize on a 2-on-0 chance late in the third period and were not able to find the equalizer while goalie Asher Rivord pulled over the final 1:43 of the contest.
Pacelli outshot Rhinelander 31-22 in the game. Rivord made 28 saves in the loss — Rhinelander third by two goals or fewer through six games this season.
The Hodags (1-5-0, 0-2-0-0 Great Northern) travel to Waupaca on Thursday.
Boys’ swimming: Rhinelander 134, Shawano/Seymour 33
The Rhinelander High School boys’ swim team easily won a battle of GNC unbeatens Tuesday, taking all 11 events in a 133-34 victory over Shawano/Seymour at the Heck Family Community Pool.
Seniors Dolan O’Malley and Shawn Denis were both four-event winners on Tuesday. O’Malley claimed the 200-yard individual medley, Denis won the 50 freestyle and both were on all three of Rhinelander’s winning relays.
Judson O’Malley claimed individual wins in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke while Mathias Fugle took the 200 and 100 freestyle. Dean Gillingham won the 500 freestyle and Charlie Antonuk took the 100 breaststroke.
Rhinelander (4-0 Great Northern) travels to Antigo on Thursday.
