Boys’ swimming: Rhinelander 2nd/7, Hodag Relays
The Rhinelander High School boys’ swim team set one new meet record and claimed five runner-up finishes Saturday as it took second in the Hodag Relays at the Heck Family Community Pool.
The trio of Shawn Denis, Judson O’Malley and Mathias Fugle broke the record in the 150-yard mixer medley relay, posting a time of 1 minute, 14.71 seconds. Rhinelander was also faster than the previous meet record in three other events, but lost out to a Bay Port team that won nine events and set five meet records on the day.
The Hodags scored runner-up finishes in the 600 freestyle, 300 breaststroke, 300 butterfly, 500 decrescendo freestyle, and 400 medley relays.
Rhinelander is back in action Tuesday as it hosts Shawano/Seymour.
Gymnastics: Rhinelander 4th/6, Snowflake Invite
The Rhinelander High School gymnastics team nearly matched its season-opening score as it took fourth in the Snowflake Invite Saturday at the YMCA of the Northwoods.
The Hodags posted a score of 116.025 points and bested GNC Small rivals Antigo and Ashland. Margherita Tibaldeshi was the Hodags’ top finisher in the all-around, taking 13th with a 29.0. Freshman Emaline Hintz was 14th with a 27.65.
Alexis Smith scored Rhinelander’s best individual finish, taking eighth on the vault. She was also 11th on the floor exercise. Tibaldeshi was 12th on the balance beam and Addison Fish led the Hodags with a 15th-place finish on uneven bars.
The Hodags (0-1 GNC Small) are idle from competition until the Wisconsin Rapids Invite on Jan. 4.
Wrestling: Rhinelander 15th/16, Rebel Invite
A short-handed RHS wrestling team finished 15th in the 16-team Rebel Invite in Crandon on Saturday.
Senior Logan Schwinger was the only Hodaga to reach the podium, finished fourth at 190 pounds. Gavin Dotter won two matches on the day at 215, but just missed the placement rounds, getting pinned in the consolation semifinals.
The Hodags (0-0) travel to Antigo Thursday to open GNC dual meet play.
