RHS Sports recap: Friday, Aug. 30
Football: Rhinelander 21, Hayward 7
Rhinelander’s defense intercepted Hayward’s Keegan Walsh four times in the second half, including a 50-yard return for a touchdown by Dolan O’Malley, as the Hodags defeated the Hurricanes 21-7 in Hayward Friday night.
Sam Zwaard and Sam Schoppe added rushing touchdowns for the Hodags as both teams amassed 157 yards of offense. Ben Olson was the Hodags’ leading rusher with 42 yards on six carries.
Rhinelander quarterback Truman Lamers left the game after getting poked in the eye in the final play of the first quarter and did not return to the contest.
Rhinelander (2-0, 0-0 Great Northern) opens conference play at Lakeland next Friday.
Volleyball: Rhinelander 1-3, Friendship Tournament
The Hodag volleyball team went 1-3 in the first day of the Friendship Tournament in Wisconsin Dells.
The Hodags lost to Lake Mills (25-18, 19-25, 15-8) and Cashton (25-13, 25-8) in pool play prior to knocking off Rio (25-17, 15-25, 15-10). Rhinelander then dropped a crossover match to Wausau West 25-20, 25-16.
The Hodags (2-6, 0-0 Great Northern) wound up in the Silver Bracket following Friday’s pool play and will play for positions 9-16 on Saturday.
Girls’ tennis: Rhinelander at Wausau West Invite
The Hodag girls’ tennis team was in Wausau for an invite on Friday. The only score reported at the time of this post was a 5-2 loss for the Hodags to Madison Memorial. The Hodags won the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles flights in that match.
The invite continues Saturday in Wausau.
