RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Aug. 27

Boys’ soccer: New London 1, Rhinelander 0

A late conceded goal while playing down a man was the difference Tuesday night as the Rhinelander High School boys’ soccer team lost its season opener to New London 1-0 at Mike Webster Stadium.

Oswin Menez intercepted a goal kick and converted a 1-on-0 chance against keeper Barak Rappley in the 75th minute, which proved to be the difference in the match. The Hodags were playing with 10 men at the time after Hart Hokens was given a direct red card for unsporting behavior in the 60th minute.

New London outshot Rhinelander 15-14 in the game and held an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. Rappley made seven saves in defeat for the Hodags.

Rhinelander (0-1-0, 0-0-0-0 Great Northern) will open conference play next Tuesday at Medford.

Volleyball: Rhinelander 6th/9, SPASH Invite

The Rhinelander High School volleyball team picked up a win in coach Jayme Wyss’s debut as head coach but couldn’t score another the remainder of the day as it went 1-3 and took sixth place in the nine-team SPASH Invite.

The Hodags opened pool play with a 25-22, 25-22 win over Berlin and followed with a 25-11, 25-11 loss to SPASH, which put the team in the silver crossover bracket. There the Hodags fell to Green Bay NEW Lutheran 25-17, 25-8 and Wittenberg-Birnamwood 25-15, 25-23.

Libbey Buchmann led the Hodags with 13 kills and added 13 digs and eight assists. Lucy Lindner finished with a team-high 17 assists and 17 digs to go along with four service aces. Kelsi Beran chipped in five kills, three blocks and three aces.

Rhinelander (1-3, 0-0 Great Northern) travels to Wisconsin Dells Friday to begin the two-day Friendship Tournament.

Girls’ tennis: Rhinelander at Wausau West Invite, ccd.

Morning rain and thunderstorms wiped out play Tuesday for the RHS girls’ tennis team in the Wausau West Invite.

The Hodags were in a dual with Bay Port when the rains came and the meet was canceled. Kelsey Winter was the only player to finish prior to the stoppage, suffering a 6-0, 6-0 defeat at No. 1 singles.

Rhinelander (6-7, 1-0 Great Northern) travels back down to Wausau for another two-day invite Friday and Saturday.

Full reports will be published in Friday’s River News.
