Girls’ swimming: Rhinelander 1st/10, Menomonie Relays

The Rhinelander High School girls’ swim team won eight of nine events and edged out Medford for the win Saturday in the 10-team Menomonie Relays. 

The Hodags trailed entering the final event — the 8x50 freestyle relay — but won that event by more than 20 seconds while Medford finished eighth, giving the Hodags a two-point victory in a scoring system that rewarded depth. 

Kiley Pooch, Ella Heck, Ellyse Younker, Celia Francis, Lily Thorsen, Emma Houg, June Chiamulera and Vivian Lamers were all four-event winners for the Hodags. Millie Gruett was a part of three wins and Rylee Mickevicius swam a leg in the winning 200 butterfly relay.

The Hodags (0-0) will travel to Stevens Point Wednesday for a non-conference dual meet.
