Nicolet Learning in Retirement announces fall classes

Nicolet College invites area seniors to explore the Learning in Retirement (LIR) program this fall with nearly 50 events and courses “designed to bring fun, diverse, and culturally enriching programming to Northwoods retirees.”

The Learning in Retirement program will feature an exciting fall 2024 lineup, beginning with the fall kickoff event and new member orientation on Sept. 10.

LIR members will have the opportunity to attend engaging presentations such as “Issues in Cardiology–Valvular Heart Disease,” presented by Dr. Joel Furda, and a screening of the documentary film “Living in Shadows,” with videographer Susan Reetz, who will shed light on the complicated lives of the children of drug addicts.

“There are a wide variety of learning opportunities that focus on the environment, health, history, science, technology, and more,” LIR President Mary Dean said in a press release. “Join us this fall for a new semester to learn new things, reunite with LIR members, meet new friends, and enjoy being retired.”

This fall’s lineup will also include the empowering presentation, “The Gift of Sight — The Lions Eye Bank of Wisconsin (LEBW),” featuring Anne Otter, LEBW outreach ambassador. She will share the work of this organization and explain how local Lions, funeral directors, nurses, physicians, and technologists contribute to this important work.

As always, the popular Ced Vig Nature Series, in collaboration with LIR, will feature several expert speakers with an option to join virtually on Zoom. This series includes thought-provoking and interesting courses such as “Threats to Wildlife Health in Wisconsin” with Gavin Cotterill, PhD, of the U.S. Geological Society; “Salamanders of the Northwoods” with Naturalist Hannah Gargrave from the North Lakeland Discovery Center; and “Owls of the Northwoods” with Troy Walters of the Northwoods Land Trust.

Beyond the classroom, LIR offers exciting excursions. Tour the Rhinelander-Oneida County Airport Fire Station, the Northwoods Community Garden, Northern Waters Distillery, and the WXPR Studios. Don’t miss the “Lunch Bunch,” a social gathering for those who enjoy trying new restaurants in the area.

LIR is a membership-based program offering short-term learning experiences for retired and semi-retired Northwoods residents.

For an annual fee of $50, members gain access to a wealth of engaging opportunities. Members can join anytime and choose from the diverse course offerings each fall and spring. Classes are held at the Nicolet College campus, the Minocqua Library, virtually on Zoom, and at various locations throughout the district.
