RHS Sports recap: Thursday, April 25


Girls’ soccer: Rhienlander 4, Northland Pines 0


Vivian Lamers and Morgan Van Zile each scored twice in the first half and the Rhinelander High School girls’ soccer team cruised to a 4-0 win over Northland Pines Thursday in Eagle River. 


The Hodags dominated the match, outshooting the Eagles 28-5, but did all of their scoring within the first 30 minutes. Mya Krouze made five saves as the Hodags posted their third straight shutout.


Rhinelander (6-0-1, 3-0-0-1 Great Northern) travels to Rice Lake for an invite on Saturday.


Baseball: Medford 12, Rhinelander 1


Medford scored in every inning except the fourth on Thursday as it pulled away and defeated the Rhinelander High School baseball team 12-1 at Stafford Field.


The Raiders scored a run in first and took the lead for good in a three-run second.


The Hodags collected seven hits in the game, including the fourth-straight multi-hit game for Dylan Vanderbunt. He scored the Hodags’ lone run in the bottom of the first inning, courtesy of an Adrian Patrone RBI single.


Oscar Hanson lasted only an inning-plus on the mound for the Hodags before leaving with leg discomfort after fielding a ground ball in the opening inning. Vanderbunt pitched five innings of relief for the Hodags, giving up six runs on seven hits.


Rhinelander (1-9, 1-5 Great Northern) hosts Lakeland on Monday.


Softball: Antigo 19, Rhinelander 0


The Rhinelander High School softball team was shutout by Antigo 19-0 Thursday at the Haug Family Softball Complex. 


The Robins scored eight runs in the opening frame and tacked on seven in the fifth. 


The Hodags recorded only one hit, a Chase Verbist leadoff single in the fourth. Nevaeh Anderson took the loss for Rhinelander in the circle.


Rhinelander (1-9, 1-5 Great Northern) is scheduled to play at Medford Friday.


Golf: Rhinelander 2nd/9, Medford Invite


The Rhinelander High School golf team shot 334 on Thursday and finished runner-up in the nine-team Medford Invite at Black River Golf Course.


Brody Kowieski came home tied for fourth individually for the Hodags, carding a 5-over par round of 77. Sam Schoppe shot 80 to finish in ninth, Blake Petroff shot 87, Hank Kowieski shot 90 and Dylan Shefveland shot 104.


The Hodags are back in Medford Friday for the second leg of the Great Northern Conference golf tournament.


Track: RHS boys 2nd/9, girls 3rd/9 Eagle Relays


The Hodag track team finished near the top of the field on Thursday, taking runner-up in the boys’ division and third in the girls’ division of the nine-team Eagle Relays hosted by Northland Pines High School in Eagle River. 


The Hodag boys won three events in the all-relay meet. Jackson Fuss, Ben Olson, Zach Germain and Myles Eagleson claimed the 4x100. Eagleson took first individually in the triple jump, leading the Hodags to the win in that event with Truman Lamers and Landon Catlin. Reid Schultz, Logan Schwinger and Sam Balge all broke the 40-foot mark as the Hodags took the shot put relay. 


On the girls’ side, Aila Bergman won both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, leading the team to victory in those events. She teamed with Averie West and Eva Heck in the 100 hurdles, and Heck and Macy Myers in the 300 hurdles. The quartet of Lexi Bishop, Olivia Ruetz, Violet Biolo and Reese Gehrig led a 1-2 finish for the Hodags in the 4x100 and the Hodags took the 4x800 with the team of Luna Grage, Kara Monk, Brynn Teter and Maria Hubler.


The Hodags have withdrawn from a meet Friday in Kaukauna as are slated to send split squads to invites at Lakeland and Three Lakes on Tuesday.


Boys’ tennis: Rhinelander 6, Antigo 1


The RHS boys’ tennis team defeated Antigo 6-1 on the road in Great Northern Conference play on Thursday.


The Hodags claimed straight set wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles with John Currie and Nick Lesch. Karter Massey picked up a win at No. 4 singles in a match tiebreak. Antigo did not field any doubles teams, giving the Hodag pairs of Joey Belanger/Dalton Fritz, Gavin Denis/Dawson Pontell and Aiden Ostermann/Michael Schiek wins by default.


The Hodags are slated to be in Wausau Friday and Saturday for a two-day non-conference invite.
