RHS Sports recap: Thursday, April 18
Baseball: Rhinelander 10, Northland Pines 4
The Rhinelander High School baseball team picked up its first win of the season Thursday night, scoring eight times between the fifth and sixth innings in a 10-4 victory over Northland Pines in Eagle River.
Owen Kurtz collected three hits for Rhinelander while Dylan Vanderbunt added a pair of hits and two RBIs. James Heck got the win, giving up four runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings with five strikeouts.
Rhinelander (1-6, 1-2 Great Northern) hosts Antigo on Friday.
Girls’ soccer: Rhinelander 0, Medford 0 (Medford wins PKs 4-3)
The Rhinelander High School girls’ soccer team dominated everything except the scoreboard Thursday in as it played to a 0-0 draw with Medford and then lost a penalty kick shootout for an extra conference point 4-3.
Rhinelander outshot the Raiders 29-6 in the match and had a 10-2 edge in shots on goal, but couldn’t put one past Medford keeper Sophia Brunner in regulation. The Hodags were up 3-1 in penalties on makes by Sophie Miljevich, Vivian Lamers and Ella Miljevich, but Brunner made three straight saves and Medford converted its final three chances to take the shootout.
Rhinelander (4-0-1, 1-0-0-1 Great Northern) hosts Antigo on Tuesday.
Softball: Medford 22, Rhinelander 3
The Rhinelander High School softball team fell to Medford 22-3 in three innings on Thursday in the Hodag Dome.
All three Rhinelander runs came with two out in the final inning. Chase Verbist had an RBI single to keep the inning going and Lily Treder added a two-run double.
Laney Haenel allowed 10 runs, four earned, on seven hits in the first inning to take the loss. Libbey Buchmann allowed 12 runs on eight hits over the final two innings.
Rhinelander (1-6, 1-3 Great Northern) had added a non-conference game at Wausau East on Friday.
