RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, April 16


Boys’ tennis: Rhinelander 5, Lakeland 2


The Rhinelander High School boys’ tennis team swept doubles and split singles on Tuesday as it defeated Lakeland 5-2 in a GNC dual in Minocqua. 


John Currie got the win for Rhinelander at No. 1 singles while Calvin Loomis was victorious in a match tiebreaker at No. 4 singles for the Hodags. 


The teams of Joey Belanger/Dalton Fritz, Gavin Denis/Dawson Pontell and Aiden Ostermann/Michael Schiek swept doubles. Rhinelander (5-1, 2-0 Great Northern) travels to De Pere for an invite Friday and Saturday. 


Softball: Lakeland 21, Rhinelander 0


Lakeland scored 16 times in the first inning and defeated the Rhinelander High School softball team 21-0 on Tuesday at Andrea Musson Field.


The Hodags recorded just one hit in the game, a single by Chase Verbist in the third inning. Libbey Buchmann took the loss, giving up nine runs (five earned) on four hits before retiring a batter in the first inning. Kelsey Winter and Laney Haenel also pitched in the game.


Rhinelander (1-6, 1-2 Great Northern) will host Medford Thursday.


Golf: Rhinelander 3rd/5, GNC Open


The RHS golf team shot 328 on Tuesday and took third overall in the GNC Open in Wisconsin Dells with a two-day score of 658 strokes. 


Sam Schoppe shot 75 on Tuesday and took third overall at 152 over two rounds. Brody Kowieski was fifth overall with a 81 on Tuesday to finish at 160 overall. Hank Kowieski shot 89 Tuesday and was 10th overall (170). Blake Petroff shot 83 on Tuesday, which included a hole-in-one on the par-3 16th hole, as he tied for 14th overall at 176.


The Great Northern Conference tournament begins next Tuesday at Inshalla Country Club in Tomahawk.
