Middle school bowlers knock off Merrill
The Rhinelander Middle School club bowling team knocked off Merrill 6-1 this past Saturday at Nick’s Hodag Lanes in a make-up of a Wisconsin Middle School Bowling Club District 9 match that was snowed out last month.
Because Merrill was making up an additional match on Saturday, the teams agreed to bowl a seven-game Baker series, as opposed to the traditional nine-game series.
The Hodags fired off strong, posting scores of 142 or higher in each of the first four games, sweeping them all to clinch the match. The team’s high score came in a 156-109 victory in Game 2. Rhinelander took each of the first six games before dropping the last, 103-98.
“It was great seeing the team come together and have a match like this near the end of the season,” coach Cory Dellenbach said. “They’re all clicking and putting things together and it's exciting to see. All the kids on the team are dedicated and are in the bowling alley on their own time throughout the week putting in the work needed.”
Natalie Dellenbach led the way for Rhinelander, filling 11 of her 14 frames on the day with a pair of strikes. Eli Miller was 6 of 8 with three strikes, Brighton Walkowski went 5 of 10 with three strikes, Silas Johnson was 6 of 14 with four strikes, Logan Campbell was 4 of 14 with a strike and Charlotte Pruess went 2 of 10.
The win moved Rhinelander to 4-3 on the season, currently in fourth in the D9 co-ed standings. Individually, Miller sits 15th in the boys’ standings and Natalie Dellenbach is 10th in the girls’ standings. D9 announced this week that its top four co-ed teams, top 15 boys and top six girls will advance to the WiMSBC state meet May 4 in Weston.
Rhinelander will wrap up its regular season this coming Sunday as it hosts Antigo No. 3 at Hodag Lanes.
