Thank you, Rhinelander

To the Editor:

As a former teacher and high school soccer coach in the Rhinelander school district and currently a high school teacher and soccer coach for both the boys’ and girls’ high school soccer teams at Northland Pines School District, I realize the sacrifice needed to juggle multiple sports and activities. I have been on the end of frustration knowing that my team and players need more time on the field and due to mother nature spring sports are at a clear disadvantage compared to other schools south of us. There have been so many seasons that the first time my girls step on a soccer field is when they play their first game at an opponent. Last year our first 4 games would have been canceled because there was too much snow on our field.

This is where a special community, school district, and individuals have stepped up to not only make their athletes’ experience better but all of the surrounding community. This selfless act has not gone unnoticed. Last year our first three home games were at the Hodag Dome and in Mike Webster Stadium. As I sit here today, I realize that if it were not for Brian Paulson, Nathan Bates, and the Rhinelander school district I would have to be looking 30 young ladies in the eyes and tell them we are not able to play soccer because the fields are not ready.

Instead, as a direct result of their generosity and selfless acts, I am sending them emails telling them it is Game Day!  Living in the Northwoods can produce long winters where our young children and adults are locked inside which has a detrimental effect on the mindset and mental well-being of many. These generous people are helping so many that they might not even understand the tremendous effect on this region.

In a world that is filled with selfishness and negativity, this is a bright spot in our area. So, thank you for helping so many as I know the Rhinelander school district sacrifices to help so many other communities.
