RHS Sports recap: Thursday, April 11


Girls’ soccer: Rhinelander 9, Mosinee 1


The Rhinelander High School girls’ soccer team scored early and often Thursday night as it defeated Mosinee 9-1 on the road in Great Northern Conference play.


The Hodags led 5-1 at halftime thanks to a pair of goals from Vivian Lamers and tallies from Morgan Van Zile, Ali Birk and Leah Weigel. Sophie Miljevich scored three goals, all in the second half, for Rhinelander — including the one that ended the game via the eight-goal rule in the 72nd minute. Ella Miljevich also scored in the second half.


Rhinelander outshot Mosinee 28-4 in the match. Mya Krouze made two saves in the win.


The Hodags (4-0-0, 1-0-0-0 Great Northern) will host Medford next Thursday.


Baseball: Antigo 8, Rhinelander 0, 6 inn.


The Rhinelander High School baseball team fell on the road to Antigo 8-0 in the GNC opener on Thursday. The game was called in the middle of the sixth inning due to rain. 


Antigo scored three times in the second, twice in the third and three more times in the fifth.


Max Ratty took the loss, allowing five runs on four hits over four innings with five walks and a strikeout. The Hodags managed five hits — one each from Seth Nofftz, Kaden Vanney, Ratty, Adrian Patrone and Rowan Wiczek.


Rhinelander (0-3, 0-0 Great Northern) travels to Wisconsin Rapids on Saturday for a doubleheader.


Softball: Mosinee 15, Rhinelander 0, 3 inn.


The RHS softball team fell on the road to undefeated Mosinee 15-0 on Thursday.


The Indians struck for 10 runs in the first inning and five more in the second. The Hodags loaded the bases in the third, but couldn’t plate a run as the game ended via the 15-run rule.


Laney Haenel took the loss for Rhinelander giving up 11 runs on 11 hits over two stints in the circle that covered 1 1/3 innings. Nora Rutkowski and Chase Verbist each recorded hits for the Hodags.


Rhinelander (1-4, 1-1 Great Northern) hosts Lakeland on Tuesday.


Track: RHS boys 1st/9, girls 1st/9, Hodag Hybrid Invite


The Rhinelander High School tack team swept both the boys’ and girls’ titles in their home Hodag Hybrid Invite Thursday at Mike Webster Stadium. 


Rhinelander beat Lakeland by 23 1/2 points for the title in the boys’ division and edged the T-Birds by 2 1/2 points in the girls’ division, leapfrogging Lakeland with a third-place finish in the final event, the 4x400-meter relay.


Zach Germain won the 100 meters and was on the winning 4x100 team with Amos Bergman, Payton Campbell and Ryley Hull. Avrom Barr, Cyrus Leisure, Jackson Weinzatl and Shawn Denis took the 4x800 relay.


Aila Bergman claimed the 100-meter hurdles for the Hodag girls, who also won three of the four relay races on Thursday. Kara Monk, Luna Grage, Maria Hubler and Brynn Teter won the 4x800; Olivia Ruetz, Macy Myers, Shyanne Hueckstaedt and Reese Gehrig took the 4x100; Lexi Bishop, Emma Deede, Lucy Eddy and Millie Gruett won the 4x200.


The Hodags are idle from competition until Friday, April 26 when they head to the Kaukauna Invite.
