Girls’ soccer: Rhinelander 2, Waupaca 0

The RHS girls’ soccer team score two goals in the final six minutes to defeat Waupaca 2-0 Tuesday night at Mike Webster Stadium.

Vivian Lamers scored the game-winner in the 75th minute as she dispossessed a Waupaca defender and fired home a shot from the right side of the box. Sophie Miljevich added an insurance goal in the final seconds.

The Hoadgs outshot the Comets 26-8 in the match and 12-3 in shots on goal. Mya Krouze recorded three saves as she posted her second straight shutout.

Rhinelander (3-0-0, 0-0-0-0 Great Northern) opens conference play at Mosinee Thursday.

Boys’ tennis: Rhinelander 6, Ashland 1

The Rhinelander High School boys’ tennis team opened its GNC title defense by knocking off the conference’s newest team, Ashland, 6-1 in the Hodag Dome on Thursday.

The Hodags had a shuffled lineup with returning No. 1 doubles player Joey Belanger out of the lineup, but the team of seniors Dalton Fritz and Dawson Pontell nearly knocked off a pair of state qualifiers from a year ago, pushing Ashland’s Bodee Mikkonen and Austin Vyskocil to a third set before falling 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3.

John Currie, Gavin Denis, freshman Calvin Loomis and Karter Massey swept singles for Rhinelander, winning their matches in straight sets. Michael Schiek and Nick Lesch were winners at No. 2 doubles while Van Tulowitzky and Asher Rivord won at No. 3 doubles.

Rhinelander (1-0, 1-0 Great Northern) travels to Wausau for an invite Friday and Saturday.
