RHS Sports recap: Saturday, Sept. 23

Girls’ swimming: Rhinelander 1st/9, Jefferson Invite

The Hodags won nine events, including a pair of 1-2 sweeps, as the won the nine-team Jefferson/Cambridge Eagle Jay Invite going away on Saturday. 

Seniors Abi Winnicki and Karis Francis were both four-event winners for the Hodags. Winnicki won the 500-yard freestyle (5:10.29) and the 50 freestyle (24.95) while Karis Francis claimed the 100 butterfly (58.93) and the 100 breaststroke (1:06.78). Celia Francis added a win in the 100 backstroke (58.95), Vivian Lamers took the 100 freestyle (55.94) and the Hodags won all three relays.

Rhinelander (4-0 Great Northern) is back in the pool Thursday as they host Mosinee. 

Volleyball: Rhinelander 5th/8, Phillips Invite

The RHS volleyball team won its final three matches Saturday and took fifth place in the Phillips Invite. 

After losing to Ashland (25-10, 25-13) and Lakeland (29-27, 25-7), the Hodags defeated Elcho (25-13, 25-17) to end pool play and then beat Chequamegon (25-13, 25-21) and Elcho (25-17, 25-11) again to take the consolation bracket of the eight-team meet.

Libbey Buchmann had 12 kills, 21 digs, nine aces, six blocks and four assists for Rhinelander. Lexi Robinson had 13 kills, while Lily Treder. Lucy Lindner had 14 assists. Emma Chiamulera had 28 digs and Kelsi Beran added nine kills and four blocks. 

Rhinelander (12-13, 1-5 Great Northern) will travel to Medford on Tuesday.
