RHS Sports recap: Thursday, Sept. 21


Boys’ soccer: Medford 2, Rhinelander 0


The Rhinelander High School boys’ soccer team suffered its first loss of the season in Great Northern Conference play, getting shut out by Medford 2-0 on the road Thursday night. 


Dayne Jacobson set up Grant Neubauer for a goal in the 36th minute and scored the clincher for the Raiders in the 74th minute, as Medford outshot Rhinelander 14-11 in the match.


The Hodags were shut out for only the second time this season and mustered seven shots on goal. Rhinelander had a pair of shots ring off the frame of the goal in short succession in the final 20 minutes.


Barak Rappley made five saves in defeat.


The Hodags (5-2-3, 4-1-0-1 Great Northern) had a game against Hayward for Saturday postponed and will next take on Antigo next Thursday in Rhinelander.


Girls’ swimming: Rhinelander 138, Tomahawk 21


The Hodag girls’ swim team turned in another dominating performance, winning all 11 events in a 138-21 victory over the Tomahawk Hathcets Thursday in Rhinelander.


Karis Francis was a four-event winner for Rhinelander and set a new Heck Family Community Pool record in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in a time of 1 minute, 6.24 seconds. She also won the 200 individual medley and was on the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams.


Abi Winnicki and Ellyse Younker also claimed four wins on the night while Celia Francis and Vivian Lamers were part of three wins each.


Rhinelander (4-0 Great Northern) travels to Jefferson for an invite on Saturday.


Cross country: RHS boys 3rd/8, RHS girls 1st/6, Three Lakes Invite


The RHS girls’ cross country team placed five runners in the top 15 as it won the Three Lakes Invite on Thursday.


Leah Jamison led the Hodags in fifth place overall (21:48.7), followed by Sophie Miljevich in eighth, Hayley Schiek in 11th, Kara Monk in 14th and Luna Grage in 15th.


The Hodag boys finished third in an eight-team field, paced by Greyson Gremban in third overall (17:09.1). Avrom Barr, Gavin Denis and Jackson Weinzatl were 12th, 13th and 14th, and Shawn Denis placed 28th.


Rhinelander will race again next Thursday in Medford.


Girls’ tennis: Rhinelander 3rd/8, GNC Meet


The Hodag girls’ tennis team finished were it started at the Great Northern Conference tournament, taking third on the day and third overall Thursday in Rhinelander. 


The Hodags had no conference champions, but scored a pair of runner-up finishes with Tori Riopel at No. 1 singles and Shayla Coppenger at No. 3 singles. Rhinelander added third-place finishes with Evelyn Sawyer/Brooke Sisel (No. 2 doubles) and Teagan Turcotte/Willow VanDenHuevel (No. 3 doubles).


The Hodags will close out dual meet play with a non-conference match at Wisconsin Rapids on Tuesday.
