RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Sept. 19


Volleyball: Rhinelander 3, Northland Pines 0


The Rhinelander High School volleyball team snapped a 62-match Great Northern Conference losing streak Tuesday night, sweeping Northland Pines 25-22, 25-23, 25-23 at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.


Kelsi Beran had nine kills, Lily Treder had eight kills and two blocks for Rhinelander. Libbey Buchmann had five kills, 20 digs and three aces, Lucy Lindner had 31 assists and Emma Chimulera had 27 digs.


Rhinelander (9-11, 1-5 Great Northern) plays in an invite at Phillips on Saturday.


Girls’ tennis: Lakeland 5, Rhinelander 2


The Hodag girls’ tennis team’s GNC title hops took a significant hit Tuesday with a 5-2 loss at conference-leading Lakeland.


Rhinelander got straight set wins from Tori Riopel (No. 1 singles) and Shayla Coppenger (No. 3 singles), but was beaten in straight sets in the other five flights.


The loss puts the Hodags 10 points behind Lakeland and four behind Wausau Newman entering Thursday’s GNC tournament in Rhinelander.
