RHS Sports recap: Saturday, Sept. 16


Girls’ swimming: Rhinelander 3rd/17, Waukesha South Invite


The Rhinelander High School girls’ swim team won three events, scored six top-three finishes overall and took third in the 17-team Blackshirt Invite at Waukesha South on Saturday. 


Abi Winnicki won a pair of events for Rhinelander, taking both the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute, 53.60 seconds) and the 100 freestyle (52.81). Karis Francis added a win in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.53) and was runner-up in the 100 butterfly (57.99)


Celia Francis swam to a third-place finish in the 100 backstroke, Ellyse Younker was fourth in the 100 butterfly and the Hodags added a third-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with the group of Younker, Celia Francis, Karis Francis and Winnicki.


Rhinelander (3-0 Great Northenr) will take on Tomahawk this coming Thursday.


Volleyball: Rhinelander 0-2, Great Northern Conference meet


The RHS volleyball team was swept in both of its matches Saturday at the Great Northern Conference tournament in Antigo.


Medford defeated Rhineladner 25-14, 25-81, 25-14 and Tomahawk swept the Hodags 25-15, 25-11, 25-18. 


Libbey Buchmann haad 10 kills on the day to lead the Hodags while Kelsi Beran and Lily Treder each chipped in eight. Lucy Lindner had 14 assists and 24 digs and Emma Chiamulera had 28 digs.


Rhinelander (8-11, 0-5 Great Northern) hosts Northland Pines on Tuesday.


Cross Country: RHS boys 18th/21, girls 15th/16, Bill Smiley Invitational


The RHS cross country team finished near the back of the pack Saturday in the Bill Smiley Invitational in Wausau, with the Hodag boys taking 18th and the Hodag girls coming in 15th in the Division 1 field. 


Greyson Gremban had the best run for Rhineladner, taking 25th in the D1 boys’ race with a time of 17:14.1. Avrom Barr was 96th, Jackson Weinzatl was 105th, Gavin Denis took 116th and Shawn Denis was 145th.


Leah Jamison took 79th (22:47.6) to pace the Hodag girls. Sophie Miljevich was 3.7 seconds back in 80th, Kara Monk was 88th, Maria Hubler was 92nd and Ella Miljevich was 93rd.


The Hodags return to action Thursday at the Three Lakes Invite.
