Boys’ soccer: Rhinelander 0-0-2, Hodag Invite
The Rhinelander High School boys’ soccer team played to a pair of ties Saturday in a home non-conference invite, drawing 2-2 against Ashland and 3-3 against Shawano.
Mason Shinners scored what proved to be the equalizing goal in the Ashland match moments after William Dykstra put the Oredockers ahead with his second goal of the match. Matthew King also scored for the Hodags, who outshout Ashland 31-12.
Goals by King and Will Gretzinger had the Hodags level at halftime against Shawano. Michael Schiek put Rhinelander ahead on a rebound goal in the 43rd minute, but Shawano’s Drake Herm tied it in the 67th minute and the score ultimately held. Rhinelander edged Shawano 26-22 in total shots.
Rhinelander keeper Barak Rappley stopped four shots against Ashland and 10 against Shawano.
Rhinelander (4-1-2, 3-0-0-0 Great Northern) hosts Mosinee on Tuesday.
Girls’ swimming: Rhinelander 1st/4 Hodag Relays
The Rhinelander High School girls’ swim team dominated at home on Saturday, winning all 10 events and setting four meet records as it cruised to victory in the Hodag Relays at the Heck Family Community Pool.
Celia Francis, Karis Francis and Abi Winnicki swam together to meet records in all three races of their events, taking the 200-yard freestyle relay, the 300 backstroke and the 300 breastroke victories. Vivian Lamers was also part of the record in the 200 freestyle relay and was a three-event winner on the day.
Ellyse Younker, Lily Thorsen and Millie Gruett broke the record in the 300 butterfly relay. Younker and Gruett were three event winners, as was freshman June Chiamulera.
All 16 swimmers on Rhinelander roster contributed to at least one relay victory.
The Hodags (2-0 Great Northern) will host Lakeland in GNC play on Thursday.
Volleyball: Rhinelander 1-3, Ashland Invite
The Hodag volleyball team won one of four matches Saturday at the Ashland Invite.
Rhinelander started the day with a 27-26, 25-15 loss to Northland Pines and then lost 25-21, 14-25, 15-8 to Ironwood, Mich., before taking a three-setter from Mellen 14-25, 25-19, 15-11. Rhinelander closed the day with a 25-20, 25-14 loss to Ashland.
Lily Treder had a team-high 16 kills and four blocks on the day. Kesli Beran had 14 kills and Libbey Buchmann and 13 kills and 27 digs. Lucy Lindner had 33 assists and five service aces while Emma Chiamulera recorded 50 digs.
Rhinelander (8-8, 0-2 Great Northern) travels to Mosinee on Tuesday.
Girls’ tennis: Rhinelander 3-2, Wausau West Invite
The Hodag girls’ tennis team took two of its three matches on Saturday to finish 3-2 in the Wausau West Invite.
After beating D.C. Everest and falling to Menomonie by matching 5-2 scores on Friday, the Hodags lost to Wausau West 7-0 Saturday before knocking off Medford 4-3 and Merrill 6-1.
Dawsyn Barkus went 4-1 for the Hodags in the tournament, collecting three wins at No. 2 singles and one at No. 2 doubles against Merrill. Tori Riopel, Shayla Coppenger and Maya Patrick also recorded three match wins in the tournament.
Rhinelander (13-13, 3-1 Great Northern) travels to Marshfield Columbus on Tuesday.
Cross Country: RHS boys 2nd/10, girls 4th/6, Colby Invite
The Hodag boys’ cross country team edged Medford by three points and took the runner-up spot Saturday in the 10-team Colby Invite.
Greyson Gremban paced the Hodags, taking sixth overall with a time of 17 minutes, 20.7 seconds. Avrom Barr was 22nd, Jackson Weinzatl placed 25th, Brody Kowieski was 30th and Shawn Denis was 46th for the Hodags.
The Hodag girls were fourth out of six complete teams, led by senior Leah Jamison in eighth overall (21:49.2), Sophie Miljevich was 17th, Luna Grage took 21st, Kara Monk was 22nd and Ella Miljevich was 26th.
The Hodags have backed out of Tuesday’s Antigo Invite and will compete next in the Bill Smiley Invitational next Saturday in Wausau.
